Cakelove
DCists have had access to Cakelove for over 5 years now, but Northern Virginia just got its first bite. Last week, Warren Brown (food network daytime host of Sugar Rush) launched a new location for Cakelove, a Cakes From Scratch bakery. And all of the cakes are from scratch. Brown, who left the fast-trac health care legal career to bake (...this is sounding like an interesting proposition) has 4 other locations in the DC area, and a fifth will be opening at the new National Harbor soon.
Normally I review meals here. The tuna was so-so, the veal was exquisite, skip the dessert, etc. But now I'm venturing into uncharted territory and reviewing a single cupcake. Because, beyond the actual cakes, if you're stopping by Cakelove for some dessert, you're getting a cupcake.
The cupcake was delicious. But it was also $4. Look, I could go on and on about the orange buttercream icing on chocolate moistness (my favorite combination, and as Barefoot Contessa would say, a pairing made in heaven). I could describe how mouthwatering the chocolate taste was, how you could smell the orange before you even bit into the cupcake.
But at the end of the day it's four fucking dollars. And I'm not an attorney yet. So until that day, Mr. Brown, where I too can afford to leave a lucrative career and go into wedding planning, I'm afraid your cupcakes are reserved for special occasions.

PS: In the trend of celebritylite chefs, Spike of Top Chef Season 4 is opening a burger joint on the Hill. I won't be going for a while, because frankly I want them to work out the problems that inevitably go with opening your first restaurant. But if you're in the mood, and have a burning desire to see Spike himself, the place opens July 7th - this Monday.
